You found a WBPSC notification. The closing date is two weeks away. Now what? Applying for WBPSC jobs in 2026 is straightforward once you know the steps, but missing a single detail can get your application rejected. This guide walks you through every stage, from creating your account to submitting your final application.
What Is WBPSC and Who Can Apply?
The West Bengal Public Service Commission recruits candidates for Group A and Group B gazetted posts across state departments. Posts range from the prestigious West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) to technical and specialist roles. If you hold a recognized degree and fall within the age limit specified in the notification, you are eligible to apply.
Check the WBPSC Recruitment hub for the full list of active notifications before you begin. New openings are listed there as soon as they are announced.
Step 1: Register on the WBPSC Online Portal
Go to psc.wb.gov.in and click “One Time Registration.” You will need a working email address and a mobile number. Fill in your name exactly as it appears on your Class 10 certificate. That name will appear on your admit card and final certificate. A mismatch creates problems later.
After registration, the system sends a confirmation email. Click the link within 24 hours. Your registration ID and password are your keys to all future WBPSC applications, so save them somewhere safe.
Step 2: Log In and Start the Application Form
Log in with your credentials and navigate to the specific advertisement you want to apply for. Each advertisement has its own form. Read the eligibility criteria one more time before you click “Apply.” Candidates who apply and are later found ineligible lose their application fee with no refund.
Fill in personal details, educational qualifications, and category information carefully. The system saves your progress, so you can return to complete it if needed.
Step 3: Upload Documents
WBPSC requires scanned copies of your photograph and signature. The photograph must be recent, with a white background, between 20 KB and 50 KB in JPEG format. The signature must be in black or blue ink on white paper, between 10 KB and 30 KB.
These file size limits are strictly enforced. Crop your scans tightly. An image that is too large or too small will throw an error and you will not be able to move to the next step.
Step 4: Pay the Application Fee
Application fees for most WBPSC exams are between Rs. 160 and Rs. 210 for general category candidates. SC and ST candidates from West Bengal are exempt from fees. OBC-A and OBC-B candidates pay a reduced fee.
Payment is accepted via net banking, debit card, credit card, or UPI. After payment, the portal generates a transaction receipt. Download and save that receipt. If your payment goes through but the portal does not update, wait 24 hours before contacting support.
Step 5: Review and Submit
Before clicking submit, review every field. Check your date of birth, category, and educational qualification. These fields cannot be edited after submission. Once you submit, the portal generates an application number. Note it down. You will use it to check your application status, download your admit card, and track results.
Step 6: Print the Application
Take a printout of the completed application form and keep it with your documents. Some WBPSC exams require candidates to bring the printed application to the exam hall. Even for those that do not, having a hard copy protects you if there is ever a dispute about your submitted details.
Documents You Will Need Before You Apply
- Class 10 certificate for date of birth proof
- Graduation or relevant degree certificate
- Caste certificate from a competent authority (if applying under reserved category)
- PwD certificate from a medical board (if applicable)
- Ex-serviceman discharge certificate (if applicable)
- Recent passport-size photograph
Keep scanned copies of all documents ready before you start the form. Scrambling for a missing scan at the last minute is how careless errors happen.
Common Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected
Thousands of applications are rejected every cycle for avoidable reasons. The most common are: name mismatch with certificates, uploading a photograph without a white background, choosing the wrong category, and entering an incorrect date of birth. Read every field label carefully. Do not guess.
Another frequent mistake is applying after the deadline. The WBPSC portal closes at midnight on the last date and accepts no late submissions. Set a reminder three days before the deadline and submit early.
After You Submit: What to Expect
WBPSC releases the preliminary exam schedule after the application window closes. For WBCS, the gap between application close and prelims is usually two to four months. Use that time well. Check the WBSSC Recruitment hub as well if you want to apply for Group C and D posts simultaneously through a parallel process.
FAQ
Can I apply for multiple WBPSC posts at the same time?
Yes. Each advertisement has a separate application form. You can apply for as many posts as you are eligible for, paying the fee separately for each.
What happens if I make a mistake after submitting?
Most fields cannot be edited after final submission. If there is a critical error, you may need to submit a fresh application before the deadline. Contact the WBPSC helpdesk at psc.wb.gov.in for case-specific guidance.
Is the application fee refundable?
Generally no. If you pay the fee and are later found ineligible, the fee is not refunded. Read eligibility criteria thoroughly before paying.
How long does WBPSC registration take?
One Time Registration takes about 10 minutes. The actual application form for a specific post takes 20 to 30 minutes if you have all documents ready.
Can I apply on a mobile phone?
The portal works on mobile browsers but document uploads are easier on a desktop. Use a desktop or laptop for the full process if possible.
