Age Limit and Relaxation Rules for WB Govt Jobs 2026

By Vicky Khati | Last updated May 13, 2026

Age limit is the first filter in every government job notification. Miss the cutoff by one day and your application is invalid. But age relaxation rules can add three to ten years to your window depending on your category. This guide covers every age limit and relaxation rule that applies to West Bengal government jobs in 2026, with clear tables for each category.

Standard Age Limits for WB Govt Jobs

The age limit varies by the recruiting body and the post level. Here are the standard ranges:

  • WBPSC Group A (WBCS): 21 to 36 years
  • WBPSC Miscellaneous Service: 21 to 36 years
  • WBPSC Group D: 18 to 40 years
  • WBSSC Group C: 18 to 40 years
  • WBSSC Group D: 18 to 40 years
  • WBPRB Constable: 18 to 27 years
  • WBPRB Sub-Inspector: 20 to 27 years
  • Teaching Posts (Primary): 18 to 40 years
  • WBHRB Medical Staff: 18 to 40 years (GDMO up to 45 years)

These are the general category limits. The actual cutoff date is specified in each notification. Your age is calculated as of that date. Check the WBPSC Recruitment hub and the WBSSC Recruitment hub for specific notification dates.

Age Relaxation for SC and ST Candidates

SC (Scheduled Caste) and ST (Scheduled Tribe) candidates from West Bengal receive 5 years of age relaxation for all state government exams. This is consistent across WBPSC, WBSSC, WBPRB, and WBHRB recruitment.

  • WBCS: Upper limit becomes 41 years (36 + 5)
  • WBPRB Constable: Upper limit becomes 32 years (27 + 5)
  • WBSSC Group C: Upper limit becomes 45 years (40 + 5)

Important: The SC or ST certificate must be issued by a competent authority of West Bengal. Certificates from other states are not accepted for WB state government reservations.

Age Relaxation for OBC-A and OBC-B Candidates

West Bengal has two OBC categories: OBC-A and OBC-B. Both receive 3 years of age relaxation for most state exams.

  • WBCS: Upper limit becomes 39 years (36 + 3)
  • WBPRB Constable: Upper limit becomes 30 years (27 + 3)
  • WBSSC Group C: Upper limit becomes 43 years (40 + 3)

OBC-B generally has slightly different reservation benefits than OBC-A in some posts. Verify the specific notification. The OBC certificate must reflect the WB state OBC list, not the Central OBC list.

Age Relaxation for PwD (Persons with Disabilities) Candidates

PwD candidates receive 10 years of age relaxation for most WB state government posts.

  • General PwD: Upper limit = general limit + 10 years
  • SC/ST PwD: Upper limit = general limit + 15 years (5 SC/ST + 10 PwD)
  • OBC PwD: Upper limit = general limit + 13 years (3 OBC + 10 PwD)

PwD relaxation applies only to posts that are identified as suitable for the specific disability type. The notification will specify which disability categories (Locomotor Disability, Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, or Others) are eligible for each post.

Age Relaxation for Female Candidates

Female candidates in West Bengal government exams generally receive 3 years of age relaxation on top of the standard limit. This applies across WBPSC, WBSSC, and most WBPRB exams.

  • General female: Upper limit = standard limit + 3 years
  • SC/ST female: Upper limit = standard limit + 8 years (5 SC/ST + 3 female)
  • OBC female: Upper limit = standard limit + 6 years (3 OBC + 3 female)

Age Relaxation for Ex-Servicemen

Ex-servicemen who have been honorably discharged from the Indian Armed Forces receive significant age relaxation. The relaxation equals the period of military service plus 3 additional years. This means a candidate who served 10 years in the army can apply up to 10 + 3 = 13 years beyond the standard upper age limit, capped at 50 years in most cases.

For WBPRB police posts, ex-servicemen are placed in a separate merit list and the selection criteria may include direct appointment without competitive exam for certain posts.

Age Relaxation for Government Employees

Existing West Bengal state government employees applying for other state government posts through WBPSC get 5 years of age relaxation. This allows career progression within the state government system. Central government employees do not receive this relaxation for WB state posts.

How Age Is Calculated

Age is always calculated as of the date specified in the notification, called the “qualifying date” or “reference date.” If the notification says candidates must not be above 36 years as on January 1, 2026, then your 36th birthday must fall on or after January 1, 2026. If your birthday is December 31, 2025, you crossed the upper limit one day before the reference date.

Always verify using a date calculator. Do not guess. A one-day miscalculation gets your application rejected at document verification even if you top the merit list.

FAQ

Does age relaxation stack for multiple categories?

For SC/ST and female: yes, 5 + 3 = 8 years relaxation. For PwD with SC/ST: yes, 10 + 5 = 15 years. But you cannot claim relaxation for categories you do not belong to. Each notification specifies how relaxations combine.

Can I use a Central OBC certificate for WB state jobs?

No. West Bengal uses its own OBC list. You need an OBC certificate issued by the West Bengal government authority for WB state job reservations. Many castes on the Central OBC list are not on the WB OBC-A or OBC-B list.

What documents prove age for WB govt job applications?

The Class 10 (Madhyamik or equivalent) admit card or certificate is the standard age proof. Birth certificates from municipal bodies or panchayats are accepted if no Class 10 certificate exists. Passport and Aadhaar are generally not accepted as primary age proof.

Is there any age limit for WBHRB Medical Officer posts?

WBHRB General Duty Medical Officer posts allow candidates up to 45 years. Specialist posts may have different limits. Always check the specific WBHRB notification for the post you are applying for.

What if I missed the upper age limit by a few months?

Once you exceed the upper age limit, there are no exceptions. The application portal typically blocks over-age candidates automatically. If you believe you qualify under a relaxation category, apply with the correct category selection and supporting documents. Errors cannot be corrected after submission.
